Leeds Lions Disabled
Youth Exchange 2017 |
We took a dozen youths over to Germany for a weeks holiday where they
were looked after and entertained by Lions Club of Germany. One chap -
whilst on the plane over there - said he wanted to get off the plane
and didn't want to go. However, a couple of days into the holiday he
said he didn't want to come home!
The project is jointly
organised by Leeds and Leeds Skyrack Lions Clubs. It was the 47th
Exchange. The following Lions Clubs gave support to the Exchange this
year: Harrogate, Holderness, Keighley, Otley, Warmsworth Edlington,
and York.
In Germany, Bad Sooden-Allendorf Lions Club organised
the Exchange with support from Eschwege, Hann. Münden, and Melsungen
Lions Clubs.

Leeds Lions Disabled
Youth Exchange 2016 |
Where we exchange young disabled and disadvantaged folk for a weeks holiday. Our exchange involves four Lions Clubs - Leeds, Leeds Skyrack, Garforth and District and Otley.
As some of you might already know, I belong to The Lions - Leeds
Lions to be exact and we do whatever we can to help the community as
do other Lions in their neck of the woods. There are Lions all over
the world which is how we come to do an Exchange.
This
Exchange was started 46 years ago by Leeds Lions and is still
running today.
We run it with help from other local Lions
Clubs who provide days out for the youths. This years involvement
came from Leeds Skyrack Lions who took them to York Railway Museum,
Knaresborough Lions enjoyed a trip to Brimham Rocks, Otley Lions
went to Bolton Abbey where they boarded a steam train and went
boating on the river and Harrogate Lions took them to Horticap in
Leeds (Where some of the youths there will be chosen for the return
trip to Germany next year) where they tucked into a BBQ.
Leeds Lions enjoyed a meeting with The Lord Mayor at The Civic Hall,
a Disco, a visit to Roundhay Park to listen to the Wetherby Silver
Band, a trip to Hunslet Club (the building of which was financed
many years ago by Leeds Lions) where they tried out sports they had
not tried before and finally The Royal Armouries.
One
of Leeds Lions days took place at our house where everyone enjoyed
Fish & Chips from a mobile fish & chip van followed by designer
ice-cream where each person was given the opportunity to choose
which flavour ice-cream they wanted and then add fruits, chocolate
flakes, sprinkles, toppings, coulis, meringue's and mallow's. We
enjoyed music from the fabulous Malcolm Povah and his Banjo. We also
had cakes galore and a little of the alcoholic stuff. The sun shone
(for a few minutes) followed by cloud. So coats - on and off - must
have been dizzy! But, a great day was had.
They stayed at
Hinsley Hall in Headingley and all went away saying it was one,
if not the, best experience of their lives.

Lion Caroline and the German Exchange 2014
Where we exchange young disabled and disadvantaged folk for a weeks holiday. Our exchange involves four Lions Clubs - Leeds, Leeds Skyrack, Garforth and District and Otley.
They had fun-filled days including trips to The Deep in Hull, a trip to the seaside, days out Bowling and Boxing.
On Sunday they listened to the Oompah Band in Roundhay Park before heading to a garden-party at Caroline's where everyone enjoyed fish and chips from the Flying Pan mobile van and made designer ice-cream with a variety of ice-creams, jelly, fruit, sprinkles, wafers, marshmallows all topped off with fresh cream.
Lion Gail supervised games of boules and Lion President Peter Sandeman provided German pop songs on 7 inch vinyl records which Lion John played on the Jukebox.
And The Sun Shone!
