Photographs of Whitby

These photographs show a little of the history and beauty of Whitby.

The character of Whitby comes from the great variety of buildings, steep slopes, narrow streets, the river, harbour and movement of the tides.

The Abbey was founded by King Oswy of Northumbria to commemorate his victory over Penda of Mercia in 655. Lady Hilda being the first Abbess there.

Next to the Abbey is St. Mary's Parish Church AD1110. Well worth a visit for many unique features.

In the graveyard stands low gravestones of Pirates. These stones are recognised by the sign of the skull and crossbones.
